The Counterfeiters

The Counterfeiters is the true story of the largest counterfeiting operation in history, set up by the Nazis in 1936. Salomon "Sally" Sorowitsch is the king of counterfeiters. He lives a mischievous life of cards, booze, and women in Berlin during the Nazi-era. Suddenly his luck runs dry when arrested by Superintendent Friedrich Herzog. Immediately thrown into the Mauthausen concentration camp, Salomon exhibits exceptional skills there and is soon transferred to the upgraded camp of Sachsenhausen. Upon his arrival, he once again comes face to face with Herzog, who is there on a secret mission. Hand-picked for his unique skill, Salomon and a group of professionals are forced to produce fake foreign currency under the program Operation Bernhard. The team, which also includes detainee Adolf Burger, is given luxury barracks for their assistance. But while Salomon attempts to weaken the economy of Germany's allied opponents, Adolf refuses to use his skills for Nazi profit and would like to do something to stop Operation Bernhard's aid to the war effort. Faced with a moral dilemma, Salomon must decide whether his actions, which could prolong the war and risk the lives of fellow prisoners, are ultimately the right ones.

Great, True Story

Beautiful and Deep
This film was a nice surprise! I was expecting yet another dramatic WWII film from Germany and got a gem! Based on a true story this film tells the tale of a jewish counterfeiter who is trying to survive the war and save his friends by printing fake money to be injected into the failing WW2 German economy. Great film! Visually striking!

Oscar winner for best foreign film
Amazing, beautiful and touching! This film has it all. It is poetic and romantic, violent and action filled. if you're a fan of WW2 classics like Schindler's List and Atonement this is a movie for you. The acting is great, the main character is complicated but relatable and the story is outlandish, yet completely true. The Counterfeiters is far from being a feel good movie, but even in its darkest moments it will inspire you. Watch it, it's amazing.

Die Fälscher - I like how original title sounds
The Counterfeiters is a masterpiece of story telling, exceptionally honest to the craft of communication, a movie that captures emotion so well that any human being can see and feel it for his or her own purposes. It touches that deeply, it's no wonder it won an Academy Award, and among Academy Awards I'd place it well above the average. If Holocauste movies can be considered a genre, this is one of the best made. For cinematography, editing, sound, writing, acting, use of music, a ten by all measures.

Dilution in the 1930's!
Well done film portraying one 'artists' path through the run-up to World War 1. Ok, he was a counterfeiter......once captured and sent to a concentration camp - Sally uses his skills to survive, thrusting him into the largest counterfeiting scheme of all time. Torn with moral and ethical sub-plots, it seemed to me he became the father to the group trying to wait out the Nazi rule. How would you stay alive? Great Movie.

Not a masterpiece of cinema but still good film
I would like to mention the leading man Solly Charles Markowitz - the king of counterfeiters, who could hold afloat even during the reign of Hitler. He were ready to fu^& everyone in order to survive. Yes I would understand him analyzing his situation. But overall I will not encourage his motivation. In summary, this movie is not a masterpiece of cinema, It's just a professionally made film that shows us the tragic event a little bit in another way. That gives it an originality unlike other dozens of other World War II related movies. That's why 4 of 5 stars goes to this movie.

Far more than another Holocaust drama
An awesomely powerful movie exploring not just the day-to-day hell of life in a death camp, but also the moral quandary of helping the Third Reich win the war.

Sensibly, this never takes sides…and it proves a chilling reminder of the dilemmas faced by those placed in an impossible situation.

Might drag on for some
I am usually a BIG fan of subplots intertwining to create a bigger picutre but I think they slow this film down a little... acting is still great but the plot might make this movie not entertaining for some...

enjoyable film
The Counterfeiters is a very enjoyable film, which isn't something that can be said for many World War II "true stories". Its interesting exploration of adaptation and survival under extreme circumstances makes for an engaging story, and one that is definitely worth seeking out.

good
i guess the only educational takeaway would be that you can win/lose a war by attack economically.

nonetheless, the film is entertaining, although there are some subplots that drag, and almost have nothing to do with the main story.

the lead actor seems to have one of those faces that does all the actor for him
