Essential Primary Source for Investors
(Please note I am not rating the SEC itself as an organization, but rather just the website linked which is the EDGAR system)
The EDGAR system may be my favorite service the US Gov't provides. It's comprehensive, timely and accountable. Almost mythical qualities when describing a gov't body.
What it is, for those who have never used it, is a repository for all the invetsor and accounting filings of publicly traded companies (10-k , 10-Q, 8-K etc). This is straight from the horses's mouth. Not the PR releases, conference calls or interpretations you find elsewher eon the web. It's where the bodies are buried in the footnotes and risks. Where the actual results must presented accurately or the companies risk legal action.
Besides a decent search function and comprehensive lsitings, they have RSS feeds you can the latest filings sent to you, that's extremely valuable as it can help you act promptly if need be if major news affects one of your holdings.
The SEC is supposedly replacing EDGAR with IDEA in the coming years, but we'll see how that goes. IDEA has very big shoes to fill.
Every EVERY Investor should know and use this resource. Frankly I find it impossible to Due Diligence correctly without it. very few people will ever tell you the negatives of a company. it's up to you to find them and this is where.
It can be useful for some traders as well in evaluating their plays, but this site is more sueful for investors.
EDGAR may not be the prettiest or sexiest site out there but it likely is the most important financial website there is today. I reccommend it to anyone.
